Boat insurance for older boats
Owning an older boat in New Zealand doesn't automatically mean you can't get insurance.
How Mariner assesses older boats
At Mariner, we're specialist marine underwriters and assess each vessel on its own merits. While some insurers may have strict age limits, we look at the overall picture, including the boat's condition, maintenance history, usage, and ownership.
For some older vessels, we may request a survey to help confirm the boat's structural condition and overall systems before offering cover. This isn't based on a fixed age alone, but rather the vessel's construction, history, condition, and overall risk profile.
What matters in a new application is demonstrating that the vessel has been properly cared for and maintained over time. Surveys generally turn up some issues. We know that older boats can have their challenges, but if you have a plan and the inclination to keep on top of the issues associated with older boats, then we can certainly consider this, too.
We also consider factors such as how the boat is used and where it is kept. A vessel used for offshore racing presents different risks to one used for recreational cruising, and storage arrangements can also influence the assessment.
Keep records of upgrades and repairs
If you've invested in your boat through refits, re-rigging, engine work, electrical upgrades, or other maintenance, keep a record of the work completed. Photographs, invoices, survey reports, and maintenance records can help demonstrate how the vessel has been cared for and may strengthen an insurance application. These records can also be helpful if you ever need to make a claim.
Talk to Mariner before making assumptions
Many older boats, including classic yachts, launches, and well-maintained trailer boats, are insured throughout New Zealand. If you've been told your boat may be difficult to insure, or you'd simply like another option, get in touch with the team at Mariner. Tell us about your vessel, its history, and any improvements you've made, and we'll let you know what's required to assess your application.
