berth at Tūtūkākā Marina or anchor in the harbour, the gateway to the Poor Knights.

The green at the marina is usually filled with parked cars, but this summer it’s ringed with sculptures from 1-5 metres tall - all by local artists - in stone, timber, mixed media, and uku. Grab a pizza, sit back, enjoy the sea breeze and take in the ocean and the art.

Sounds good, right? We agree, and that’s why Mariner is proud to be sponsoring Sculpture on the Green, a free event from 12 December 2026 to 31 March 2027 connecting local artists with boaties in a relaxed open-air setting.

We caught up with the event’s founder and curator, Tūtūkākā artist Shane Hansen, to chat about the event.

Q: What is Sculpture on the Green all about and why did you start it?

Shane: The marina's a lovely spot in summer, but the green just becomes a parking lot. It's wasted space. I wanted to lift the space with something special.

People come here for the surfing, the fishing, the leisure boating, the water. Quite often there's nothing else. This is a way to bring visitors and locals into more of a vibe - to give them something else to do.

It will be a free open-air gallery in a beautiful spot - a good excuse for boaties to come ashore. At the same time it helps lift the profile of our local artists and connect them with people they may not otherwise have met.

Q: What should visitors expect at Sculpture on the Green?

Shane: Sculpture on the Green is a unique way to experience Tūtūkākā through the eyes of its local artists. 11 artists will be exhibiting, including myself [see a full list of artists below*] and all pieces will explore the artists’ connections to whenua, moana, community and the Tūtūkākā Coast.

There will be plenty of opportunities for visitors and locals to connect with artists in different ways. There will be live mural painting on set days. I’ll be around providing walking tours, and talking about the pieces and the place. We’ll have artist evenings where each exhibitor talks about their work for 10 minutes - it will be an intimate thing, you’ll mingle, see the work, talk to the artists.

It's about sharing the eclectic mix of people working here. These are people who often work in isolation, and this event connects them to the community.

Q: What about the artists?

Shane: The artists are a real mix. Stone, timber, clay, driftwood. For example, my work is contemporary Māori and Kiwi art - a celebration of cultures, flora and fauna. Paul Harris does a lot in wood, stuff with a Pacific vibe, frangipani motifs, native timbers like tōtara and pōhutukawa.

Garry O'Garra is an ex-builder and carpenter who's been collecting driftwood and turning it into mythical sea creatures.

Vicki Graham's been painting the billboards and signboards for local events for years. Now she's getting into sculptural work with reclaimed building waste - big flowers hanging from the pōhutukawa.

Donn Salt is one of New Zealand’s most experienced stone carvers.

They're all so different. Some are new to sculpture. Some have been doing it for a while and have a profile.

Q: Who’s backing this event?

Shane: Our sponsors, like Mariner Insurance and Whangārei District Council, are playing a big part in bringing this event to life. Being by the marina we’ll get so many visitors via boat - and almost everyone here has a boat, so Mariner Insurance made sense as a sponsor. It means so much to have their support.

Q: When’s the best time to visit Sculpture on the Green?

Shane: Anytime! From the week before Christmas to the week after, you get younger people and families. Then they leave and the older crowd moves in - they’re here for longer, they want to settle in, check out the area. Over New Year we have friends who sail their boat up from Tāmaki for a couple of nights - it’s such a cool time.

Whether you’re in a launch or a dinghy (or a car or on foot) this event is for you. It’s free. There’s a great pizzeria next door. You can see it from the harbour as you come in. It’s going to be really special.

How can I get involved with Sculpture on the Green?

Show up at the Tūtūkākā Marina Green any time from 12 December 2026 to 31 March 2027 and have a look around. No tickets or bookings necessary - this is a free event and all are welcome.

Join the mailing list to stay up to date with event announcements, artist talks, studio visits, art trails and other creative happenings.

Follow the event on social media including Facebook and Instagram.

RSVP to the event (optional) and read profiles of all the artists at the event’s main page.

See you on the Green!

This event is proudly sponsored by: Whangārei District Council, Mariner Insurance, Robinsons Asphalt, ABD Group, Erin Farrow and Waiparore Luxury Accommodation.

"Free sculpture event at Tūtūkākā Marina this summer","Mariner is sponsoring Sculpture on the Green at Tūtūkākā Marina.
