Where an app needs a subscription or only covers part of the country, we've said so.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Safety and trip reporting\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fapps.apple.com\u002Fnz\u002Fapp\u002Fcoastguard-tautiaki-moana\u002Fid1336740100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>Coastguard\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> is the one to load first. You can log a trip so Coastguard knows where you're going and when you'll be back, check forecasts and tides, and see live wind conditions at nearby stations. You need an NZ-based App Store or Google Play account to download it. The information is stored on your phone, so it keeps working out of coverage as long as you've updated it beforehand.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Weather and tides\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fitunes.apple.com\u002Fus\u002Fapp\u002Fmetservice-marine\u002Fid783127076?ls=1&amp;mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>MetService Marine\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> shows rain radar, surface pressure charts, tide information, sunrise and sunset times and severe weather warnings. Maritime NZ lists it alongside MarineMate and Coastguard.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.swellmap.com\u002Fapps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>SwellMap Boat\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> has forecasts for more than 300 boating and fishing locations around the country. It covers sea height, chop, wind, tides and sea temperature, and you can set alerts for when conditions match what you're after. It's free with ads, with a paid ad-free option.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.predictwind.com\u002Fapps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>PredictWind\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> combines several forecast models with its own and adds weather routing and departure planning. It suits both yachts and powerboats. Free forecasts are available and the more advanced tools sit behind a subscription.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.windy.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>Windy\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> is the app to open when you want to watch the weather move. Its animated maps show wind, waves, swell, tides and currents, and you can compare forecast models side by side. There's a paid tier for extras.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Navigation and charts\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Treat these as a backup to your chart plotter and paper charts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.garmin.com\u002Fen-NZ\u002Fgarmin-technology\u002Fmarine-technology\u002Fcharts-and-maps\u002Fnavionics-boating-app\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>Navionics\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> covers Australia and New Zealand through an annual chart subscription with Garmin. The charts can be used offline and the app works from your phone's GPS, which makes it a sound backup to a plotter.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.savvy-navvy.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>Savvy Navvy\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> plans routes that take account of tides and wind, and lets you set a departure time. In January 2026 it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.savvy-navvy.com\u002Fnews\u002Fsavvy-navvy-signs-exclusive-australian-and-new-zealand-distributor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>signed a distributor\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> to sell subscriptions through dealers in Australia and New Zealand, so check its coverage map for your area before you subscribe.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fapps.apple.com\u002Fnz\u002Fapp\u002Fmarinetraffic-vessel-tracker\u002Fid563910324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>MarineTraffic\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> shows the live position of vessels that transmit AIS, which helps when you're sharing a busy harbour with commercial traffic. The free version relies on coastal receivers, and satellite coverage further out costs extra.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Anchoring\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fanchoralarmpro.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cstrong>Anchor Alarm Pro\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa> is an anchor watch app. According to its developer, it's free to use with no account, and it runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and in a web browser. It sounds an alarm and sends a push notification if the boat leaves the zone you set, and a second phone or a laptop ashore can keep watch through a QR code.
